Bill Section

It is not uncommon for a BOQ to contain upwards of a thousand items. It is therefore essential to structure a BOQ in a meaningful way. Just like in any technical document, bill sections present one way of achieving this. In civil construction, for example, it is convenient to group items pertaining to drains, prefabricated culverts, earthworks, surfacing etc., so each of these could be a bill section. All bill items, composite items, and comments will belong to one of the sections. Bill sections can also contain subsections, to any depth, for further division of the BOQ. Bill sections are not only useful for structuring purposes, they also provide summary data on the total estimated cost of their child items.

In Trimble Quest, each bill section has the following properties:

  • Item Number

  • Description

The description of a bill section is simply a short line of text describing what the section represents.

The item number is a field that can be used for identification purposes, or for referencing some external code/specification on which the BOQ is based. This field does not have to be unique and is not compulsory.
